Chapter Fifteen

Too Forgettable

A two-hour sword training session has an inevitable consequence.

I need a shower, unlike Sebastian who is as dead as disco music. Guess I always tried my damndest to cling to life, or maybe a vampire’s ability to sweat operated on a conscious basis, like activating features on a highly elaborate doll. Squeeze here to make her cry. Poke this button and you have to change her diaper, and so on. Some girl I went to grade school with had a doll that would ‘pee.’ As long as I live, I’ll never understand how anyone thought diaper wetting was a good idea for a toy.

The instant my toes hit the bathmat after I finish showering, the phone rings.

Tammy’s the only other person in the house at the moment, so no big deal doing a hasty run to my bedroom with only a towel on. If not for being in the middle of the Zandra case, I’d have let it ring and called them back. The Caller ID shows Fullerton PD, which I assume to be a call from Detective Sherbet.

I swipe to answer and lean my head to the side, trying not to get the phone covered in wet hair. “Hello?”

“Sam?” asks Sherbet. “There’s something really weird going on.”

“Statement of the year.”

He chuckles. “Seriously. Um… you asked me about something. I have a note here reminding me to call you regarding what I found, but I don’t remember anything about the case.”

“Argh.” I bounce in frustration. “Yeah, something weird is going on. I asked you to try to find out who a black Mercedes van belongs to. Only got the first four of the plate. 78GX or 7BGX.”

“Yes!” He hammers a fist onto his desk. “Now I remember! Dammit. It’s not like me to forget. Must be getting old.”

I put the phone on speaker and proceed to dry off. “It’s not you. There’s something else at work here. I’ve interviewed a ton of people about this and no one remembers a damn thing.”

“What, like magic?”

“Definitely magic.”

“You know I don’t believe in the hocus pocus stuff.”

“And you didn’t used to believe in creatures that go slurp in the night, either. Unless you’ve got a better theory, the best answer I’ve gotten so far is some kind of spell. Whoever abducted Zandra must have done something mystical to cover their tracks. Everyone involved has holes in their memory. Even you, who I merely asked about the van.”

“You’re starting to freak me out here, Sam.” He whistles. “You really believe in this stuff?”

“Think about who you’re talking to and reconsider the question.”

He chuckles. “Ehh… good point.”

“So, did you run the plate?”

“I did. Then I called over to Corona PD, asked for the detective working the missing person case for Zandra Adams. They transfer me over to a Detective Weathersby, but she acted like they sent me to the wrong detective. Didn’t have any recollection of being assigned the case.”

Wow. Something really doesn’t want this woman found. I really hope this isn’t Elizabeth or she’s become astonishingly powerful.
